Ketamine Effective In Management Of Chronic Pain

Ketamine is an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist that has been shown to be effective in the management of chronic pain, including cancer-related neuropathic pain. In addition to its analgesic effects, ketamine has been found to have opioid-sparing effects by counteracting central nervous system sensitization seen in opioid-induced hyperalgesia.

At sub-anesthetic doses, ketamine has a improved safety and adverse event profile compared to when used as an anesthetic. Clinical evidence supports the use of intravenous ketamine infusions for chronic refractory pain, and alternative modes of delivery are also being explored. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of action and potential long-term effects of ketamine use in chronic pain management.
